Mineral nutrients for the human body include: iron, calcium, copper, sulfur, phosphorus, magnesium and many others. An archaic use of the word "mineral" comes from the Linnaean taxonomy in which all things can be assigned to the animal, vegetable, and mineral kingdoms. The word "mineral" is also used inconsistently in geology.
Veins of galena containing silver (silver-lead) are probably produced by ascending hot water solutions emanating from bodies of igneous rocks, while the galena in limestone was probably deposited by groundwater that dissolved the sulfide from the surrounding sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Galena occurs very widely spread.
In 1828 the first newspaper was established in Galena, and called the Miner's Journal. The growth of Galena was not rapid or "mushroom" in its character. It is situated on both sides of Galena River, and is built on five different hills and a narrow strip of bottom land near the river on each side.
Che Galena is by far the greatest ore of lead. Galena is the most common mineral containing lead, and contains mostly lead. Galena is a friend to those in turmoil. When your nervous energy is at a high level for any reason, it is the first stone to bring you to a place of rest.
Galena forms isometric crystals in which the ionic lattice is like that of sodium chloride. The mineral is easily weathered to secondary lead minerals, the upper part of galena deposits often containing cerussite, anglesite, and pyromorphite. Nodules of anglesite and cerussite with a banded structure and a galena core are common.

Galena Group. Galena is the primary ore mineral of lead. Worked for its lead content as early as 3000 BC, it is found in ore veins with sphalerite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, tennantite-tetrahedrite, etc. and in skarns, as well as in sedimentary rocks where it may replace carbonate beds or be deposited in pore spaces.
Galena is the most abundant lead mineral, has been mined for millennia, and remains our major source of that metal. It is a metallic, lead-gray mineral with cubic cleavage and a distinctly high density that makes galena samples feel much 'heavier' than expected for their size.
The plantation was named "Galena" after a Scottish mineral that signified "peace." The house still stands, but there is no town of Galena. There is a Galena School near the location. The area is about 10 miles southwest of Holly Springs on Route 4 in Marshall County.

Galena is a primary mineral. Most of the lead minerals, such as Cerussite and Anglesite are secondary minerals formed from Galena. Impurities in the structure of Galena, such as silver and bismuth, may change Galena's cleavage properties.
Galena grows in beautiful metallic cubes. Often refined as lead ore, galena can also be used to teach students about a mineral's luster, streak, and cleavage. Because of the lead in the chemical formula, galena is much denser than most minerals, and will seem unnaturally heavy for its size. This sample is also available in packs of 12.
Galena is the natural mineral form of lead sulfide. It is one of the most abundant and widely distributed sulfide minerals. It is the most important lead ore mineral. It is also an important source of silver, which is often found in the mineral. It was once used as the semiconductor (or "crystal") in crystal radio sets.
Named for the Latin word galena which was given to lead ore or the dross from melted lead. Galena is a common mineral and widespread mineral with thousands of localities worldwide. Noted deposits include in the United States, the Czech Republic, Germany, France, England, Scotland, and Mexico.
The three most common ore minerals are galena, sphalerite, and pyrite. Galena, a lead sulfide (PbS), is heavy, brittle, and breaks into cubes. Sphalerite is a zinc sulfide (ZnS) mineral that is brownish, yellowish, or black. It ordinarily occurs with galena and is a major ore of zinc.
Galena is a city in Cherokee County, Kansas, United States. The city was named after the lead ore galena found here in 1877. The city was originally platted by the Galena Mining and Smelting Company and was to be known as Cornwall.
Galena is a mineral composed of lead and sulfur, and this mineral, PbS, is the primary ore of lead. There is also a good bit of silver associated with galena, and silver is often recovered as a ...

Lead mining built Galena. While Native Americans had sporadically mined lead for thousands of years, it was the arrival of Europeans that led to the first major mineral rush in U.S. history. Our exhibits document this saga, with original mining tools displayed, as well as a life-size windlass.
Galena is one of the most abundant and widely distributed sulfide minerals.Galena is the principle ore of lead, and forms glistening silver cubes with almost unnaturally perfect shapes. Although lead is normally extremely flexible, the sulfur content of galena makes it extraordinarily brittle …
Galena. Missouri designated galena (lead sulfide) as the official state mineral in 1967. Galena is the major source of lead ore, and Missouri is the top producer of lead in the United States. Galena is dark gray in color and breaks into small cubes. Lead is a very soft, blue-gray, metallic element that has been used since ancient times.
Sphalerite
Galena, the official state mineral of Wisconsin, is the raw material used to produce lead. During the Wisconsin "lead rush" of the 1820s-40s, lead was more valuable than gold. That is because just about everybody, rich or poor, used objects made of lead in their daily lives – products that ranged from plumbing to toothpaste!…
